• Louis and Auguste Lumiere give the first public demonstration of the cinematograph. The French brothers patented the combination movie camera/projector in February. The brothers later produced the first film newsreels and what some consider the world's first movie, “Workers Leaving the Lumiere Factory.”
• The first cabs with taxi meters began operating in London. The taximeter gave the cab its modern name. Its purpose was to indicate to both driver and passenger the distance travelled and so avoid arguments about payment due.
