Bal Keshav Thackeray, or Balasaheb Thackeray, was an Indian politician and the founder of the Shiv Sena, a right-wing pro-Marathi & Hindu nationalist organization active mostly in Maharashtra.

Thackeray has allegedly incited violent clashes between Muslims and Hindus throughout the years. The most infamous episode occurred in 1992-1993 when anti-Muslim rioting in Mumbai lasted for several weeks and resulted in the deaths of almost 1,000 people.

Thackeray stated that he was "not against each and every" Muslim despite being known to speak highly of Adolf Hitler. In contrast, he said in an interview, "I consider those Muslims who live in this nation but do not obey the rules of the land traitors."
