David Jolley
Hornist David Jolley began his horn studies in his native Los Angeles with James Decker and Wendell Hoss. While still a student of James Chambers at the Juilliard School, from which he holds Bachelor and Master of Music Degrees, Mr. Jolley was honored to perform with the NY Philharmonic in New York and Washington, DC, under Leonard Bernstein.
Mr. Jolley has thrilled audiences throughout the world with his “remarkable virtuosity” (New York Times) and has been hailed as “a soloist second to none” (Gramophone Magazine), concertizing extensively in North and South America, Europe, South Asia, Korea, and Japan. As Principal Horn and founding member of Orpheus, Mr. Jolley made over two dozen recordings for the Deutsche Grammophon label. His other recordings include six solo recordings for the Arabesque label, among them the complete Mozart and Strauss Concerti.
A chamber artist of unusual sensitivity and range, Mr. Jolley is a member of the virtuoso “unquintet”, Windscape, Artists-in-Residence at MSM, the acclaimed New York Brass Arts Trio, with Trumpeter Joe Burgstaller and Trombonist Haim Avitsur, and Trio Valtorna, with Ida Kavafian and Gilles Vonsattel. David Jolley, a graduate of The Juilliard School, is one of the leading horn players of his generation. A founding member of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, he has also collaborated with the Guarneri Quartet, the American String Quartet, the Beaux Arts Trio, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, as well as pianists André Watts and Murray Perahia. A former member of the Dorian Wind Quintet, Jolley founded the quintet Windscape in 1994 with four other eminent New York soloists. Many works have been written for him, including Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Concerto for Horn and String Orchestra, John Harbison’s Twilight Music, George Tsontakis’ Dust and Shiver and George Perle’s Duo for Horn and String Quartet. Among his numerous recordings are more than two dozen CDs with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra—Gramophone hailed him in its performances of two Mozart concertos as a “soloist second to none”—as well as solo discs containing the Strauss Horn Sonata with Samuel Sanders, works by Alec Wilder, and French Romantic repertoire. A frequent soloist with orchestras across the country, Jolley also teaches at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Mannes College of Music, and Queens College of the City University of New York.
