Dorothy Gilman
American novelist
Dorothy Edith Gilman (June 25, – February 2, ) was an American writer. She is best known for the Mrs. Pollifax series. Begun in a time when women in mystery meant Agatha Christie's Miss Marple and international espionage meant young government men like James Bond and the spies of John le Carré and Graham Greene, Emily Pollifax, her heroine, became a spy in her 60s and is very likely the only spy in literature to belong simultaneously to the CIA and the local garden club.[1]

[edit]Dorothy Gilman was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, to minister James Bruce and Essa (Starkweather) Gilman. She started writing when she was 9. At 11, she competed against to year-olds in a story contest and won first place. Butters, Jr. September 15, ; they divorced in The couple had two children, Christopher and Jonathan. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 3, at p.m. at The Community Church of New York, 40 East 35th Street in Manhattan. Gilman passed away from complications due to Alzheimer’s.
Writers come to the craft at all ages and stages of life. Dorothy Gilman began to write at age nine. At eleven, she entered a contest and won over writers aged ten through sixteen. In , she won another award—the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master.
Gilman studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In the s, she wrote children’s books under her married name, Dorothy Gilman Butters. When the marriage ended in divorce, Gilman moved to a coastal village in Nova Scotia. Her only non-fiction book, A New Kind of Country, () tells her story of late in life self-discovery.
