However, since then, the combined forces of cheap printing, affordable crayons, pedagogical theories and practices, the world of advertising and merchandising, and the uncertain career paths of people with some education in the arts have made the emergence of a new creative practice possible. At least since the 1960s, innumerable colouring books have been published in immense print runs throughout Europe and the United States, becoming a part of children’s everyday life to such an extent that when “colouring books for adults” became a trend in the early 2010s,3 they had to be labelled as such—“colouring book” being almost synonymous with “children’s colouring books”.4
