'Valentina's Nightmare': Child survives season in hell
"Valentina's Nightmare," a heartbreaking and enraging "Frontline" (9 p.m., most PBS stations), is a tutorial in what Hannah Arendt called "the lesson of the fearsome, word-and-thought-defying banality of evil."
It is the story of Valentina Iribagiza, a 13-year-old Rwandan who had the misfortune of being a member of the Tutsi tribe during the 1994 civil war with the Hutu. One April day, her Hutu neighbors came with machetes, grenades and clubs. They herded the Tutsi into a Catholic church. Then, says confessed killer Denis Bagaruka, "Everyone was killed. We couldn't spare the children's lives. Our orders were to kill everyone." He seems to feel this is a perfectly reasonable explanation.
Valentina nearly died and was permanently maimed by a machete blow. But she survived by hiding for 43 days among the corpses. She watched as her father and 16-year-old brother were killed. Surrounding the village, the Hutu returned daily to make sure the job was finished. They kept regular working hours, killing from 9 to 5, then going home.
Eventually, the war ended, and the Hutu executioners are, very slowly, being delivered to justice. But the horrors they committed are indelible.
